This jumper is one of the biggest projects I’ve ever worked on. It’s a vintage pattern from the 80’s from a book called Knitting Masterpieces by Ruth Herring and Karen Manners. The yarn is Drops Alaska, which is a 100% wool Aran weight yarn. It’s knitted flat in four pieces, using intarsia to change colours.

It’s super heavy and extremely warm so I can only really wear it in the winter, but I did wear it for a trip to see a replica of the Bayeux Tapestry which is on display at Reading Museum which is a great exhibition, highly recommend it. And I will absolutely be wearing it to go and see the real thing when it comes to the British Museum in September 2026.

The front of the jumper has Harold holding a spear. It’s from a section where Halley’s comet has just been seen, and everyone has come to tell him about the bad omen. His face and hand outline are embroidered, not knitted, so they look janky.

The right hand sleeve has this cool tree design, also taken from the same scene on the tapestry.

The left sleeve has a tower, and over it you can see Halley's comet in blue and red. This bit was so satisfying to knit in intarsia, probably because of the long straight lines.
